What is the purpose of a thesis? Why is it important that your thesis is clear?
A thesis directly answers the question asked to you. It needs to be clear because your thesis structures exactly what your paper is about and the order you're going to address the answer. For example, when your teacher asks you, "Who is the most influential baseball player?" Your thesis answers the question and guides the reader's expectations of what's going to be covered. Your thesis would reply, "Babe Ruth is the most influential baseball player because of his statistical milestones, flexibility of position, and lasting cultural impact to this day."
Where is the shift in Shelley's Ozymandias?
Line 12. In some printings of the poem, there's proper spacing between lines 11 and 12. Without the spacing, you can still recognize the shift because the tone changes radically. The first 11 lines build the legend of this fearsome ruler while line 12 abruptly changes to the futility of his charges over an extended duration.
How can you tell whether to use effect vs. affect in your sentence?
Effect is a noun, marking a change when something happens. Affect is a verb, used when something creates an effect. Examples: The poor taste was the effect of bad fish. The bad meal affected my mood.
