How do I craft a strong thesis statement?
First, start by brainstorming what you know about the topic of your essay. After brainstorming everything you know, decide the purpose of your essay. Think about the message you want your reader to know when they're done with your essay. Start to craft some thesis ideas from these activities. As your body paragraphs develop, you may revise your thesis to reflect these changes.
Subject: English as a Second Language
How can I develop more fluency with academic English?
There are four language domains when learning English as a second language. They are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. First, focus on listening and speaking. When you develop oracy/fluency with listening and speaking, the reading and writing will then build on those skills. Practice hearing the language in context and give yourself many opportunities to speak and use the language.
How do I find the main topic or main idea of a paragraph or story?
To identify the main topic or main idea of a paragraph or story, first read the paragraph or story. Then re-read it. When we re-read we notice more details than with a one-time read. Use context clue to help you identify the most important information in that paragraph or story. Highlight it so that you can remember it later. After doing this for multiple paragraphs, a general theme should emerge to help you identify the main topic of a story.
