Question:

What is the purpose/meaning of of the plus (+) and minus (-) signs?

Answer:

The plus (+) and minus (-) signs primarily symbolize direction in a particular case or field/plane. This often is first illustrated on the number line (that is, 1st dimension, in horizontal orientation), where we learn to associate "moving left" with the minus sign and "moving right" with the plus sign. (Of course, with the number line in vertical orientation, "moving down" is minus and "moving up" is plus.) This is important when it especially comes to addition and subtraction, and that we must recognize when we have a positive value/number and a negative value/number, we are looking at where we are displaced from one value to the next through both the amount of units we move and in what direction we move. Thus, we get a baseline understanding of not just working with numbers, but ultimately the way we perceive the physical world and nature.

Question:

What is the importance of a study having a representative sample?

Answer:

A representative sample pertains to the study's (or rather researcher's) understanding that in order to attempt to generalize to the population of interest, the sample must optimally mirror the population it supposedly comes from. It ensures that the results obtained and analyzed best represents the population, and thus have better use in applying to individuals in the population rather than results from a sample that does not reflect the population well.
