MLA stands for Modern Language Association which is an organization that publishes a style and formatting guide for non-fiction, usually scholarly, writing. MLA format is used in liberal arts writing, while other formats like APA or CSE are used for other subject areas. For example, if you are writing a paper about a novel you have read you would use MLA format because interpreting a fictional piece of writing is a facet of the liberal arts.
