Question:

What is the importance of pre-algebra?

Answer:

It is the foundation for all math classes to come in the future and you learn the basics like Y=MX + B which will stick with you for the rest of your life. Pre-Algebra is often helpful in most careers as well and is one of the sections of math that more people use.

Question:

Why is memorization a last resort technique?

Answer:

While memorizing facts and knowledge will often help you in the immediate such as on the current test you are taking it doesn't help with long term knowledge of a subject. Once we stop practicing that fact, usually after the test, we often forget what we were working on. Memorization also doesn't work with a lot of subjects such as math or writing. Having techniques that help you better understand the processes and content is more likely to help you.

Question:

Do you believe that behavior modification, such as positive and negative rewards/punishment, is the best way to change children's behavior? If no, what other methods would you use?

Answer:

While behavior modification is effective as children (and even adults) do respond to rewards and punishment it doesn't always teach them why they should or should not perform a behavior. It is a way to quickly change a behavior in a person but children can often attach certain behaviors to responses we don't even realize that we are given. I believe that talk therapy through play, discussion, and imagination is a great way for children to better understand their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
