Question:

If 15% of the 60 person class got an A, the highest grade, on the final exam, how many people received a grade lower than an A?

First, you must begin by finding out the number of students who received an A on the exam. You do this by setting up a proportion of (part/whole)=(percent/100). The part, or the number of students who received an A, is unknown, so label that x, and the whole is the total number of people in the class. Therefore the equation is (x/60)/(15/100). You use cross multiplication to get 100x=900. Then, you divide both sides by 100 and determine that x, or the number of students who received an A, is 9. However, the question asks for the number of people who received a grade lower than an A, so you must subtract the number of people who got an A, 9, from the total, 60. Therefore, the answer is 51 people.

Question:

Explain the connection between the 18th and the 19th amendments.

The 18th Amendment set strict limitations on the sale and consumption of alcohol, and the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. These two amendments are connected because the temperance movement and the suffrage movements were very much connected. At the time of the passing of the 18th Amendment, women were not allowed in the taverns and bars where the men would consume alcohol and discuss political matters. The women wanted to have a hand in the political decisions but had no way to involve themselves while the discussions were occurring in the bars. Therefore, the women fought for the passage of the 18th Amendment so that the political discussion may be moved to an area where they could take part. it is in these political discussions that the women were able to fight for suffrage and the passing of the 19th Amendment.

Question:

Select the letter that corresponds to the area of error in the following sentence. If there is no error, select letter E. While Dan, Jenny, and I enjoy cooking, I cook better than them. A B C D

The correct answer to the above problem is D. The answer is D because as it stands, the word "them" is an objective pronoun while a nominative pronoun is needed because the sentence is an incomplete construction. The complete construction would be the following: "While Dan, Jenny, and I enjoy cooking, I cook better than they do." Therefore, the word after "than" must be a nominative pronoun because it is used as the subject of the part of the sentence following "than." Additionally, option A is correct because the Oxford comma, or the comma used before the conjunction "and," is appropriately used in lists. Option B is correct as well because it is the object of the verb "enjoy." Moreover, option C is correct because then is used in comparisons while then is used with timing. The answer could not be E because of the error in option D. Therefore, D is the correct answer.
