Question:

Suppose you have a right triangle with one side as 4 centimeters and the other sides are labeled B and C. Suppose cosC/B=35 degrees. Find the unknown angles and the length of side B.

Archana P.

Answer:

The question is written in a tricky way but basically if you draw out the triangle and write out everything the question tells you, you will realize that cosC/B=35 degrees is just an angle and the question tells you where to position it. This questions requires you to understand that a right triangle with all the angles summed up should equal 180 degrees. Since this is a right triangle we know the perpendicular angle is 90 degrees. Therefore, 180- (35 + 90)= 55 degrees. This is the unknown angle we had to find. To the find the length of side B, we can use either sin, cos, or tan and use the corresponding angles. One way to remember the equations of sin, cos and tan is to use the acronym SOH CAH TOA. Sine is opposite over hypotenuse. Cosine is adjacent over hypotenuse. Tangent is opposite over adjacent. Using the angle 35, you can set up the equation cos35=4/B. Now you can multiple each side by length B to get Bcos35=4. Now you can divide each side by cos35 to get: B=4cos35. Plug this into your calculator to get 3.28 centimeters which is what length B equals.

Question:

DNA is a antiparallel double stranded molecule and it can be written as or drawn as the top strand being 5' to 3' and the bottom strand being 3' to 5'. If DNA polymerase adds nucleotides, during DNA replication, 5' to 3' which strand will it add nucleotides to?

Archana P.

Answer:

The first thing to understand is that DNA has to stay as an antiparallel double stranded molecule. The second thing to understand is that DNA polymerase functions to add nucleotides during replication to maintain the polarity of DNA. Polarity refers to whether a DNA strand is 5' to 3' or 3' to 5'. If DNA has to stay antiparallel and DNA polymerase adds 5' to 3' then it will add nucleotides using the bottom strand because the polarity is antiparallel.

Question:

Solve the following equation by solving for x. 4(2x-3) + 5x + 6(2/3x+4)= 30

Archana P.

Answer:

The goal of this problem is isolate x or get x alone. The first thing to do is to use the distributive property. Therefore, multiply 4 to each term in the associate parentheses and multiply 6 into each term in that associated parentheses. Now you get the new following equation: 8x -12 + 5x + 4x +24=30. Now you can combine like terms meaning you can add 8x, 5x, and 4x together and add -12 to 24 to get the new following equation: 17x +12 = 30. Now you can subtract 12 on each side to further isolate x. 17x +12-12=30-12 to get 17x = 18. Now you can divide 17 on each side to finally solve for x: 17x/17=18/17 to get x = 18/17 or 1.06 in decimal form.
