What is Locard's Exchange Principle?
Locard's Exchange Principle is the most important principle in Forensic Science. This principle states that when two physical objects (inanimate, animal, or human) come into contact with each other, a mutual transfer of materials takes place between the two. For example, in a robbery, the perpetrator of the crime both leaves behind something from his clothing or body and takes with them something from the scene of the crime. It is because of this exchange principle that we have the Trace Evidence discipline in Forensic Science. This discipline focuses on these small, often-times microscopic items which are transferred at the scene of a crime.
