Answer:

¡Hola! Me llamo Lauren.

Question:

Identify the issue with this sentence: "A very popular girl, several people think that Sarah should be voted as homecoming queen."

Answer:

This sentence contains a misplaced modifier and uses passive voice instead of active voice. "A very popular girl" is the misplaced modifier that describes Sarah. "Sarah should be voted as homecoming queen" also contains passive voice. A correct version of this sentence would be, "Sarah is a very popular girl whom several people selected for homecoming queen."

Question:

What is a social construct, and how does this concept govern our daily lives? Give examples.

Answer:

I believe social constructs represent the identities and labels that people throughout history have developed. These labels, such as race and gender, have acquired social significance because people within society have deemed these traits as important. We can attribute the social significance of these labels to history because in the past, dominant groups (e.g., white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant, male) have used racial and gender identity to justify the marginalization of minority groups. They even resorted to science in an attempt to prove their biological superiority. Nevertheless, such scientific racism is invalid because race is not a biological trait but a social one. In the same, vein, gender also falls under the category of a social construct as it an ascribed role rather than a biological one. Unfortunately, social constructs still affect our daily lives because people regularly experience discrimination on the basis of gender and/or race. The best way to reduce the impact of such discrimination is through education.
