Subject: Writing

Question:

Is there only one writing process that all writers should adhere to?

Answer:

There is no such thing as one writing process. Different writers approach writing differently, with some taking more time on the brainstorming stage, others not wanting any feedback until they are close to the final draft, etc. It is the tutor's job to adjust to the student's writing process to help them effectively. The tutor, however, can suggest helpful strategies the process used by the student hinders their success. Tutors must also be aware of how culture influences writing, especially when it comes to international students. Thus having a size fits all model will make it difficult for these types of students to learn and will decrease their confidence as writers.

Question:

Should cinema be considered a part of literature, and should it be celebrated as such?

Answer:

Cinema should definitely be considered as a form of literature. For decades cinema has told unique stories that explore various human issues. Directors like Spike Lee and Agnes Varda have told unique stories that capture much of the human condition. It is also useful to remember that some of what we call classic literature like Shakespeare was common literature in his day, with his plays being watched by the common folk in London the same way cinema is today.

Question:

In what ways does social media make one an effective communicator?

Answer:

For starters, social media helps one to be precise. Usually, there are limitations on the number of characters one can use in a social media post, which helps the communicator get to the point quickly. It also enhances rhetorician skills; for even platforms that allow multiple characters, it is still the standard to make captions short for people tend not to read long captions. This helps a person to come up with something short that grabs the audience's attention. Social media also gives the opportunity to combine different modes of communication (text, photo, and video) to appeal to the audience.
