Question:

What is deficit thinking, and how does it hinder the librarian endeavor to teach information literacy to students?

Inactive
Lizbeth S.
Answer:

Deficit thinking is teaching students based on what skills they are perceived to lack instead of focusing on what skills they already possess. With the intent of addressing the deficits of knowledge, the literature in LIS (Library and Information Science) attaches many of its negative assumptions to marginalized groups. Deficit thinking can be minimized by first analyzing the variety of ways in which students apply information seeking behaviors, and discovering the funds of knowledge that students already possess. This places confidence in students abilities and competence, and does well to mitigate stereotypes within the profession.

Question:

Give an example of when American international business interests impacted Central American politics.

Answer:

Honduras is one example of many Latin American countries that have been impacted by foreign companies from the US. These companies through their manipulation of the Honduran government officials, became the basis of the Honduran economy and took land and money from Honduras in a way that served the business interests of themselves and the US. As bananas became the main export in Honduras, the banana industries took hold of the country. In the 1870s the Honduran National Government embraced the idea of a nation supported by the bountiful resources that their land had to offer. Laws were put into place that gave tax initiatives to farmers enticing them to grow crops for international markets. It wasn't until the 1900's that this export business began to take a different hold on the country in the form of the banana industry. Sam Zemurray, an American businessman founded the Cuyamel Fruit Company in Honduras in the early 1900's. In 1910 he bought land for the purpose of creating a banana plantation. However, the current president Miguel Davila was negotiating with a bank in New York on loan terms that threatened Zemurray's business interests. Zemurray quickly staged a coup against the Honduran president, by buying weapons and enlisting the help of a US mercenary soldier named Lee Christmas. President Davila was overthrown, and replaced by Honduras's ex-president Manuel Bonilla. The US government ignored this military coup, because they themselves did not like Davila and his political stances. Under the administration of President Bonilla, Zemmuray's company was able to flourish, due to the many concessions given to him through the Honduran government. His company was eventually bought by the United Fruit Company, and Zemurray retired from the banana business. After a brief retirement Zemurray eventually became president of the United Fruit Company which had a far more overreaching influence across the political scope of Latin America. Honduras still exports bananas and other tropical fruits, and a major portion of their economy is still supported by this. Although United Fruit no longer directly controls the government the people of Honduras continue to have to deal with foreign companies taking away their land and using it for their own business interests.

Question:

How did the printing press contribute to the Renaissance and Reformation?

Inactive
Lizbeth S.
Answer:

In comparison to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance was a period marked by accelerated innovation in thought, innovation, invention, and exploration.. The invention of the printing press in Europe served as a major accelerator of knowledge and ideas. This increased the availability of knowledge and allowed people outside of the noble classes to learn about and create their own works of literature. Scientific literature, and religious publications could now be read by thousands. The printing press increased the availability of religious texts, and translations of the bible into the common languages of the people lead to people questioning the common-held biblical interpretations of the Roman Catholic Church. This sparked multiple splits from the Church, beginning with Martin Luther and continuuing into various factions.
