Question:

Compare and contrast congruence and similarity.

Inactive
Natalie M.
Answer:

When two shapes are congruent, they are exactly the same - in shape, size, angles, side lengths, etc. Congruent shapes are always similar, but the reverse is not always true. Similar shapes share the same shape and angles, but are not necessarily the same size. All squares, for example, are similar, due to all angles being 90º, but not all squares are congruent, since some are larger or smaller than others.

Question:

What is the difference between the root and the bass of a chord?

Inactive
Natalie M.
Answer:

The root of a chord is the note that the chord is derived from or based on. When a chord is in root position, the root will also be the bass. The bass of a chord, however, is always the lowest note of the chord, regardless of inversion. For example, if a C Major triad is in *root position*, C is both the root and the bass. If the triad is in *second inversion*, C is still the root (hint, hint, the name of the chord), but G is the bass, as it is the lowest note in that inversion.
