What is the "reverse" mechanism of glycolysis?
Glycolysis is the break down of glucose to produce energy. As such, the reverse process should make glucose. The process of making new glucose is called gluconeogenesis!
What determines the acidity of a compound?
The stability of the conjugate base determines the acidity of a compound. A stronger acid has a more stable conjugate base.
Why is the intersection of medicine and patient narratives really important?
If there is something that rivals my passion for medicine, it is my love for literature. An inebriate of words and language, I have traveled to the edges of the universe by donning the lenses of my characters and envisioning their perspectives. From Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales to Saramago’s Blindness, books have allowed me to rival the brevity of life with the gravity of human experience. Words are indispensable forces, capable of bestowing power to impassioned seekers or expressing compassion in the midst of suffering. Thus, I want to learn how language and medicine intersect, the knowledge of which will enable me to imagine what my future patients might undergo in their illness experience and to undo the dichotomies and divides we see in healthcare today. With narrative competence, I hope to address my patients’ voices, honor their experiences and integrate their stories into the care I provide for them.
