How do you write a successful introduction paragraph for an essay?
One effective way to write a successful introduction for an essay is to outline the paragraph using an upside-down triangle. This image creates a visual that portrays how you should start your introduction general and finish very specific. For example, the first sentences of your introduction paragraph should be your hook, which incites the reader to continue reading. It can be a general, overarching statement that is not referring to anything overly specific. After your hook, you should have a bridge sentence. The purpose of the bridge sentence is to connect your hook to your thesis. If you are writing a literary analysis for example, this is where you should first mention the novel and the author. The last sentence of your introduction is the most important as this is your thesis statement. The thesis statement is what you are going to prove in your paper, and every sentence in your paper should be backing up this claim. Here is when you are the most specific and delineate a clear argument. The most basic thesis statement uses a "because" phrase. An elementary example of this would be: "The book was valuable to read because it was educational, entertaining, and well written." This thesis outlines what each of the three body paragraphs will include, illustrating an effective thesis statement.
