Question:

What are the similarities and differences between mitosis and meiosis?

Courtney S.
Answer:

Mitosis and meiosis are similar in that they are both cellular processes that end in cell division. Mitosis occurs in every cell that is not a sex cell, or a cell required for reproduction. Meiosis, however, occurs only in cells required for reproduction, in humans, these are sperm and egg cells. Mitosis and meiosis begin by having the DNA of the cell replicated so there are two copies of every chromosome. The chromosomes are aligned and separated. The cell divides and each new cell contains an exact copy of the original cell. The main difference between mitosis and meiosis is that meiosis goes through this process twice. The first stage of meiosis, called meiosis 1, is exactly the same as mitosis, but the cell undergoes the same process again. This results in four new cells, called gametes, that each have one-half of a set of all chromosomes.

Question:

What was the first governing document of the United States? Was it successful?

Courtney S.
Answer:

The first governing document of the United States was the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation put an emphasis on a weak central government and strong state governments. The citizens of the newly formed country were very concerned about creating a government that would establish a supreme ruler, such a king. The Articles of Confederation proved to be unsuccessful because the national government had no way to enforce laws, taxes, or control the military.

Question:

What are some ways you can identify character development in a text?

Courtney S.
Answer:

Character development can be identified in a variety of ways. One of the most obvious ways is when the author provides new information about a character. This could be as simple as learning a character's name, their relationship to other characters, or something more complex such as a change in beliefs or attitudes. When looking at character development over the span of a text, it is important to look for those changes. Characters grow and change throughout the text. These could be physical changes, emotional or mental changes, or changes in attitude. Another obvious way to identify character development is through the character's actions and dialogue. We learn the most about characters by what they do and what they say and how they do it and how they say it. For example, if a character is described as weak and quiet at the beginning of the story, but by the end is described as bold and assertive, that character has shown development.
