What is the value of 8 to the sixth power?
When a number is raised to an exponent, that means that the number is being multiplied by itself that many times. In this case, the number 8 is being multiplied by itself 6 times. We can write this expression out like this: 8x8x8x8x8x8 Then we just go from left to right multiplying each number together until we get out a solution. 8x8=64 We can then rewrite the equation like this: 64x8x8x8x8 because we multiplied two of the 8's together. Then, we can either continue multiplying times 8 until we use all the numbers, like this: 64x8=512 512x8x8x8... Or we can rewrite each set of two 8s as 64, like this: 64x64x64 Because we know that two eights multiplied together equals a total of 64. Using the second equation, we just multiply all three numbers together to get the final answer. 64x64=4,096 4,096x64=262,144 So the total value of 8 to the sixth power is 262,144.
Find the direct object(s) in the following sentence: Dennis and Susan ate omelets for breakfast.
The subject of this sentence is "Dennis and Susan" because they are the ones doing the action. The action, or verb, in this sentence, is "ate". Next, we must ask ourselves, "who or what" is affected by the verb "ate" In this instance, the word "omelets" is the direct object, because that is who or what Dennis and Susan ate.
Solve the equation for y: -16=(y/4)+2
In order to solve for y, you want to isolate the y variable on one side of the equal sign. To do this, you can subtract 2 from the right side: -16(-2)=(y/4)+2(-2) which would give you: -18=(y/4) Then, in order to get y completely isolated, you will multiply each side by the reciprocal of the fraction. Here, the fraction given is (y/4). Another way to read this is y x (1/4). In this case, we will multiply each side by (4/1) in order to isolate y: -18 x (4/1)=(y/4) x (4/1) -18 x 4= -72 and when you multiply something and divide something by the same number, that number cancels out so (y/4) x (4/1) = y Therefore: -72 = y In this case, the y value is equal to -72.
