What are a few symptoms a patient may experience taking an ACE inhibitor and what is a possible recommendation?
Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE) can cause a patient to have a chronic cough, one suggestion could be to switch to an ARB (Angiotension receptor blocker).
What are a few labs would you review to assess liver function and why?
Bilirubin- elevation may indicate obstruction of the bile duct. Albumin- low levels may suggest a decreased function. AST and ALT, if elevated indicated liver damage. INR and PT prolonged values may indicate diseased liver.
What are 3 functions of the kidney?
The kidneys play a major role in different processes including fluid and blood pressure balance led by the Angiotensin and Renin systems and waste removal, red blood cell production triggered by the hormone erythropoetin, balancing bone mineralization by balancing calcium, vitamin D, and PTH.
