Question:

A boy was counting birds in his cage. When he counted 2 words at a time, 1 bird was left. When he tried to count 3 birds at a time, 2 birds were left. When he tried to count 4 birds at a time, 3 birds were left. Find the number of birds, if the number is somewhere between 40 and 50.

Smit K.
Answer:

If there was one more bird, the total number of birds would have been exactly divisible by each of these numbers 2,3,4 (The remainder in each case is less than the divisor by 1). LCM of 2,3,4 is 12. Since the number is required between 40 and 50, (an integral multiple of 12 between 40 and 50) - 1 = 48-1 = 47.

Question:

Mr. and Mrs. Anderson purchased an antique jewel case in January 2016 for $22000. Every month, for the next 10 months, they incurred $200 maintenance over the case. For the next 2 months, they incurred $500 maintenance. In January 2017, the antique piece was appraised at $80000 and donated to a museum. However, the Andersons could claim the donation as a tax deduction and as a result, received 60% of gem's appraised value as a tax refund. What would be the net gain of Andersons from these transactions?

Smit K.
Answer:

Total money spent by Andersons = $22000 + $(200*10) + $(500*2) = $25000. Money received by them = 60% of $80000 = $48000. Net gain = $48000 - $25000 = $23000
