Describe the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and explain, briefly, how they are used in bibliographic records.
Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) are a thesaurus of standardized subject headings that are maintained by the Library of Congress. This thesaurus is important for maintaining a consistent lexicon of subject headings that can be used to catalog materials. By using a central source of subject headings, libraries and institutions across the country can describe their bibliographic materials in a consistent manner, making it easier for professionals to search as well as describe. Further, having this consistency also makes it easier for materials to be collocated in collections, have records be combined or linked in large databases, such as OCLC, and generally makes for better organization.

What features of the work made Robert Rauschenberg's "White Painting" notable?
Although a seemingly simple triptych piece consisting of a single color, Robert Rauschenberg's White Painting challenged a number of preconceptions tied to art through it's construction and meaning. Rauschenberg's work comprised three panels of the same size, all painted the same white color. Where artists and the originality and attribution of their works usually drove the value and appreciation of works, the "White Painting" challenged these concepts as the paintings were repainted more than once by assistants in order to refresh the pristine appearance. This brought into focus the question of whether the idea of the work was, itself, art rather than the piece itself. For many, the white and featureless canvasses lacked meaning. However, the meaning or interpretation of the work came from the viewers, as their shadows cast shapes and shades onto the canvases, thus imparting individual features and meaning rather than imparting something specific from the artist. Thus Rauschenberg, along with other Modern artists and artworks, challenged the norms of traditional art.
