First, we need to simplify the left and right-hand side of the equal sign, so that no bracket remains. => -15x-10+x+3 = -16x-20+13 [ here normal multiplication was done] Second, we need to put all the "x" terms on the left-hand side and all the remaining terms which do not contain "x" on the right-hand side. =>-15x+x+16x=-20+13+10-3 [we need to remember that on changing sides,the sign changes, here the sign of -16x changed to +16x, it doesn't matter on which side you are shifting, the sign will always change, negative will become positive and positive will become negative] Then we simplify the expression, =>-15x+17x=-20+23-3 {we are first adding] =>2x=-23+23 =>2x=0 =>x=0
