What is feminist media theory and how can it help us understand traditional gender stereotypes in media and film?
Feminist media theory is based on the idea that cultural beliefs about gender roles (and this is what led to feminism) can help to explain gender stereotypes in media and film. Feminist media theory focuses on challenging stereotypical gender representations and finding alternative ways of representing them without losing media audiences. Entertainment is escape, but at the same time it is a powerful medium because these representations influence our actions and our opinions and perceptions about women--as well as men, which can contribute to gender inequalities in reality.
