Question:

When writing, why is punctuation so important?

Answer:

Punctuation is significant when it comes to communication on paper, text, email, or any other digital format. Particularly in the professional world, a missing comma, period, or dash can make a world of difference! Take this classic example: "Man without him woman is nothing." Without punctuation (or changing of word spelling), that sentence makes no sense whatsoever! It also matters where you place the punctuation. "Man. Without him, woman is nothing." That doesn't sound right either, does it? Now, as I've mentioned, spelling also matters when it comes to punctuation. "Man, without his woman, is nothing." See how the "him" is now "his"? Punctuation (and, again, changing up of words--i.e. editing) is huge.

Question:

Why did William Shakespeare have odd spellings in his plays?

Answer:

First and foremost, William Shakespeare was alive during a time when education was given to the upper-class. Most didn't know how to read or write. The upper-class had a better advantage, though, than the lower-class. Words were often created by how they sounded. Of course, spellings have been changed over the past couple of centuries, but that's just how the people figured out the spellings of their words during Shakespeare's time. Listening and sounding out.

Question:

Why is English difficult at times?

Answer:

English is an old language. Its roots are taken from Latin--same as most other languages. However, English is considered one of the hardest ones to master. Not even professionals always get it right. English is so complex and there are two different types: British English and American English. The spellings are often different! It isn't something you can understand quickly or perhaps even over an extended period of time! It takes a lot of constant learning and figuring out, especially when you throw grammar into the mix.
