How do the characters in Romeo and Juliet enhance the theme of the story?
The adults in Romeo and Juliet enhance the story because their hate for one another is what causes the conflict in the play. The war between the houses of Montague and capulet causes Romeo and Juliet's love to end in tragedy. It is not about the whims of young love, but rather about the hate of the adults in the play that interferes with the innocence and purity of young love. This causes Romeo and Juliet to die and thus instills the tragedy of the play.

What is the significance of Nick Carraway's character in The Great Gatsby?
Nick is the narrator of the story. Therefore he becomes a symbol of the reader as he carries us through the plot of the book. Nick's arrival into the world of Gatsby and the drama between all the other characters in the book is significant because he is the outsider who is invited in to watch the lives of these characters. Other characters take him in and confide in him. He is a spectator, just as we, the reader, are spectators and he is there the whole time without ever getting too involved in the plot. He is a representation of how the reader feels, always watching but never able to influence the story. He is caught in the current of the story and is as much along for the ride as those who are reading.
