Question:

A cruise ship sails the Atlantic Ocean for 36 hours at a speed of x knots per hour (kph), and for 12 more hours at 20 kph. If the average speed for the entire cruise was 22 kph, how do you find x?

Jessica S.

Answer:

In order to find the speed the cruise ship traveled for 36 hours, you set up the equation as: 36x + 12(20) = 48(22), or 36x +240 = 1,056. Solve for x by subtracting 240 from 1,056. 36x = 1,056 - 240 or 36x = 816. Divide both side by 36 and x = 22.67 knots per hour (rounded 2 decimal places) Therefore, the cruise ship sailed the Atlantic Ocean for 36 hours at a speed of 22.67 kph.
