Question:

What is a thesis statement? And what is the best way to go about writing one?

Jessica J.
Answer:

The thesis is the main idea of your paper, and without it readers won't be able to follow your argument. Before thinking about the essay, immediately answer what the question is asking. Nothing about this first answer has to be perfect or concise, but it should at least be a complete sentence, and it's important to avoid being vague. This is your pre-thesis. As you move on to each body paragraph, come back to your thesis and do a re-write. It's important to double-check to make sure the evidence you're presenting aligns with your assertion.

Question:

What is settler colonialism, and how does it contribute to the erasure of indigenous peoples?

Jessica J.
Answer:

Settler colonialism is a distinct system that functions based on the "replacement" and eradication of indigenous peoples. While settler colonialism is not technically a form of genocide, it does often have genocidal outcomes that perpetuate the repression of indigenous peoples history and culture, as well as exploiting the lands and resources that sustain indigenous communities. Settler colonialism is a direct contributor to the erasure of indigenous people's through genocide, assimilation, land displacement, lack of resources and more.
