Tutor profile: Laila I.
Writing and test prep tutor for 10 years
I am an interracial Third Culture Kid. I love to travel and meet people from diverse backgrounds. I believe there is nothing more important than human connection, which has led me to become a teacher. In addition, there is nothing I enjoy more than language: I am an avid reader; I enjoy writing; and I think grammar tests are fun. In a world in which few people enjoy their work, I consider myself fortunate to be able to do work that I enjoy and find fulfilling.
I have been teaching English my entire adult life. For the past 10 years I have focused on teaching grammar, writing, reading comprehension, and test preparation (TOEFL, SAT, GRE, GMAT).
2008 - 2012
Self-employed, English Teacher/Writing and test prep tutor (SAT, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT)
2020 - Present
Most of my students hope to go to university in the United States and, therefore, need help preparing for tests such as the TOEFL, SAT, GRE, and GMAT. In preparation for these tests and for my students’ future academic success, I emphasize developing excellent writing skills under timed conditions, as well as impeccable grammar.
Self-employed, Freelance Spanish-English Translator
2007 - 2021
I have done translation work for a diversity of organizations, such as Heifer SARO, Heifer International, Private University of Santa Cruz (UPSA), Nur University, Center for Legal Studies and Social Research (CEJIS), and Vintage Bolivia, among others. This work has spanned a wide range of topics, including education, social justice, finance, agriculture, and the oil industry.
Eagles School, High School English Teacher
2019 - 2019
As a high school English teacher, I taught grammar, writing, and literature to 14 to 16 year olds. An important aspect of this job was also establishing a rapport with my students and coworkers, understanding that human connection is at the root of learning and growth.
Self-employed, English Teacher
2017 - 2018
During this time, I taught a diversity of classes, ranging from basic EFL to advanced literature and writing classes.
Educere Educational Services, Co-owner/Teacher supervisor/English Teacher
2013 - 2017
These were years of great personal and professional growth: As an English teacher, I finally felt I had mastered my subject matter, and, as co-owner and boss, I developed a greater understanding of the complexities and subtleties of interpersonal relations and the ability to engage with others in a more tactful and meaningful way.
Self-employed, English Teacher
2007 - 2013
I had a very enriching experience teaching English to people of diverse age, race, and gender. During this time, I learned that the teaching-learning process is an exchange of knowledge and experiences that can be equally enlightening for teachers as it is for students, thanks to each person’s unique background and life experiences.
