Question:

What is a good strategy for answering TOEFL questions, whether it be for Speaking or Writing?

Answer:

In short, be as personable and authentic as possible. The evaluators do not want to see or hear a GENERIC answer, that seems to be repeated from training earlier. They want to see if you have mastered English, and are able to demonstrate and apply your English capabilities. What helps is to begin your answer by restating the question in statement form. For example, if someone asks "What is your favorite activity to do on holiday?", reply with "My favorite activity to do on holiday is...". Then, such as a five paragraph essay, with an introduction, body, and conclusion. You can say three things relative to the question, elaborate with 1-2 sentences on each thing you chose to say or write; then conclude with the most preferred one or the most memorable one. This will show some authenticity in your answer, as well as being able to show your personality through your communication abilities in English. Make sure not to over-complicate your answers, so that your English is also of good quality when responding.

Question:

What is a good method to create a 5 paragraph essay?

Answer:

First, the structure of a 5 paragraph essay should follow with an introduction paragraph, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. The introduction paragraph should start with background information on the topic and follow a progression of relevant information, and narrowing down into detailed information about your topic. You may also include references if it is a research paper. Lastly, conclude the introduction paragraph with a thesis statement or topic statement. The thesis or topic statement should including the objective of the essay and should reference the three subtopics that will be included in the three body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should start with an introductory sentence, followed by three main sentences, supporting the main idea of the paragraph. The body paragraph should elaborate on these main ideas and can also include examples, references, or deductions. The last sentence of the body paragraph should be a transitionary sentence into the following paragraph, allowing a smooth transition for the reader, and cohesiveness of the entire essay. Lastly, in the conclusion paragraph, assure that you re-emphasize the points made in each body paragraph and how it relates to your thesis or topic statement. This is the best place to reinforce whether or not you are correct with your thesis or topic statement, as well as clearly stating your thesis or topic statement again. You may close the conclusion with the greater impact of this topic and how it may affect the reader or society at large.

Answer:

One of the best ways to learn English as a Second Language is to immerse yourself in an English speaking environment as much as possible. In class or during tutoring sessions, try to speak English as much as possible. In your free time, enjoy English speaking entertainment, such as movies, TV shows, and music. You will be able to learn about English-speaking cultures, as well as be able to use subtitles for reference. Lastly, is try to interact with English-speaking peers in person, or online safely, and practice your English in casual conversation and possibly meet new friends with shared interests. This is especially important to practice before studying abroad in an English speaking country.
