What is more important to the story: character development, good grammar, or plot? Explain your answer.
This is a trick question to get the student talking about the elements of a story and their perspective of the writing process. Both a strong plot and engaging character development are essential to a good story. Also, no matter how strong the idea is, if it is not written well, the reader will not be able to fully enjoy it. This question will help you gauge a student's understanding of why each element is important. Writers all start differently. Some may develop characters first, other may have the story concept before even considering who will be in it. Which one is your student? Ex. Good grammar is essential. However, I find that interesting, dynamic characters are the most important element. If the reader can relate to the character, they are more engaged in the story.
Subject: Library and Information Science
The core value of a library is "access;" access to information, materials, and resources. However, sometimes this access is hindered depending on the type of library. What are some obstacles in access that are unique to public libraries? Public school libraries? Private school libraries? Academic libraries?
Each library's access is dependent on two factors, policy and funding. Public libraries are dependent on the communities they are based in. Access is usually not restricted unless the community influences the library. These libraries are usually protected by policies, established at national and local government levels, as well as location-based policies. Both public and private school libraries are dictated by the age of the students and the lessons at the school. Though we ideally would like to provide access to all materials, curriculum takes priority. However, private schools are less likely to be governed by municipal government policies and instead are governed by boards, committees, benefactors, and parents (more so than public schools). Therefore, it is more likely private schools are more restrictive. Lastly, academic libraries also face the private vs. public discussion and focus on curriculum. However, the age group is older and the subject matter is more difficult.
Subject: Film and Theater
What is a recent film you have seen? In that film, how has color attributed to the atmosphere of the film or a particular scene in the film? What emotion or information is the color portraying?
I recently saw the new Candyman in theaters. They used a lot of yellow throughout the film. The yellow represents bees and honey which is tied to the creation of the Candyman. It can also be interpreted as sickness and fear. The legend of the Candyman causes fear and the main characters in all the movies are made to think they are crazy.
