Question:

What is the difference between static and dynamic characters? Based on the text, what is an example of each type of character?

Answer:

Static characters stay relatively the same throughout a piece of writing. In contrast, dynamic characters undergo some type of change over the course of the story. In Alan Paton's "Cry the Beloved Country", Stephen is a static character because his principles and actions remain consistent throughout the entire novel. However, James Jarvis is a dynamic character because he becomes far more opposed to apartheid in South Africa over the course of the novel.
