Briefly describe the purpose and process of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and provide an example of when it might be used.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based psychological practice that is effective for a wide range of diagnoses. This practice emphasizes the role of faulty cognitions (incorrect and unhelpful thoughts), and unhelpful learned behavior patterns in psychological problems. CBT seeks to challenge these thoughts and behaviors, and promote healthy coping. This may include strategies such as illuminating faulty cognitions, building problem-solving skills, promoting self-confidence, facing fears, or learning to relax the mind and the body. One example of CBT in practice might be with a client who experiences depression, and repeatedly states that nobody likes them. By bringing this faulty cognition to the client's awareness, challenging it with examples of people who do love and support the client, and working to establish self-confidence and self-worth in the client, a therapist could use CBT techniques to work through the client's depression, and build healthy coping skills.

Floor polishing costs $4.50 per square foot. If your kitchen measures 14 feet by 13 feet, how much will it cost to polish your whole kitchen floor?
Start by drawing a picture of the kitchen described in the problem. In the picture, we see that the kitchen is shaped like a rectangle that is 14 feet long and 13 feet wide. Next, notice that the floor polishing rate is per square foot, which means the problem is looking for an area measurement. Because the kitchen is shaped like a rectangle, we know that area is length x width. Find the kitchen's area (a): a=lw a=(14 ft)(13 ft) a=182 square feet Then, use the floor polishing rate to find the cost for this area. If it costs $4.50 for polishing per square foot, multiply this rate by the number of square feet to find the total cost (c): c=$4.50(182) c=$819 Yikes! This floor polisher is expensive!
