Answer:

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a broad law dealing with a variety of issues. Its original goal was to make it easier for people to move their medical records and information to get the care they needed. Two important pieces of HIPAA legislation are the Privacy Rule and the Security Rule. The Privacy rule is the patients' rights law. It gives patients the right to control who may access, use or disclose their confidential personal or protected health information (PHI). The Security rule governs the security of electronic patient information.

Question:

Quality healthcare is care that is safe. Identifying patients correctly to make sure each patient gets the correct medication and treatment is an example of safe healthcare. What is the correct way to identify patients correctly?

Answer:

Use at least two ways to identify patients correctly. For example, ask patients to state their name and date of birth. A patient's medical record number may also be used to identify a patient correctly. The patient's room number or physical location is not to be used as a patient identifier.

Question:

If a patient presents to the emergency department complaining of flu like symptoms, what infection control measures would you put in place and why?

Answer:

Influenza, or the flu, is spread by droplets. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, respiratory droplets are generated. Transmission occurs when these droplets are deposited onto someone else's conjunctiva (eyes), nasal mucosa or mouth. The infection control measures that you should put in place are hand hygiene and putting on a mask. The mask will prevent the infectious droplets from close respiratory or mucous membrane contact.
