The correct answer is sentence 2. This is because of subject/verb agreement! The subject in these sentences is "the student" and we can further define it as third person singular. We have just finished reading William Golding's "Lord of the Flies". As we were reading, you might have noticed that when the boys initially landed on the island, it was very important to them to light a fire as a signal and to do their very best to make sure that the fire did not burn out. Many literary critics see the fire as a strong symbol in this novel. What could the signal fire symbolize?
The signal fire could be a symbol of civilization, and even more so, it could be a symbol of the boys' tie to civilization. The stronger the fire burned -and the stronger their will was to keep the fire burning - the stronger their connection to civilization and desire to be saved was. As the novel progressed, the fire began to die and the boys became more accustomed to their life on the island. In fact, it did not seem as if they had any interest in returning to what they had known as home. Their connection to the "real world", as they knew it, was effectively dying.
