What would you say is the reason for the resting membrane potential in a cell in humans?
The resting membrane potential comes initially from the repartition of ions on both side of the membrane: indeed the concentrations, and therefore the charges are split differently across the membrane. Because of the differences in permeability for each ion, it creates an electrical potential. In the case of humans, it is mostly due to Na+ and K+ ions. Na+ concentration is higher on the outside of the cell whereas K+ concentration is higher on the inside. The membrane is more permeable to K+, meaning that the charges flowing through the membrane don't compensate each other thus resulting in an electrical potential.
