Subject: Microsoft Excel

Question:

How can I get Microsoft Excel to allow leading zeros in a field, such as when creating a database of addresses for mail merge?

Answer:

In order to allow for leading zeros in such a scenario, you would select the column that needs to contain leading zeros. In the case of a mail merge database, this is usually a zip code field. You would choose 'Number Format' then 'More Number Formats' from the drop-down menu, then choose 'Special -->Zip Code'. If, on the other hand, it is not a mail merge database, under 'Number Format' you could simply choose 'Text' to allow leading zeros to appear.

Question:

What are some ways to retain what you've read in textbooks?

Answer:

One of the best methods to retain a lot of what you read for homework are to first scan the text, noting any subheadings, charts, tables and bolded words, then rereading the text to expand on those notes. If you have the time, try re-stating key concepts from the reading in another way. A modified version of this will also work if you are pressed for time. You would scan the text, taking note of subheadings, charts, tables, and bolded words, then read the abstract (if present), introduction and conclusion/summary.
