Question:

How do I fix run-on sentences?

Answer:

Oh, where to begin? There are many ways to revise or edit a sentence to ensure it's not a run-on. Some quick edits include using a semicolon to separate ideas that are related yet complete on their own and using a comma paired with a conjunction to connect clauses. Revising techniques usually take a bit more time as they could require reorganizing the arrangement of words (its syntax) or examining the word choice to better fit the idea someone is trying to convey. No one way is more correct than the others, and a writer should be able to apply whatever strategy best works for them and their paper.

Question:

If I notice similarities between Megan Thee Stallion and Lady Macbeth, would that be a good topic for my literary analysis essay?

Answer:

I don't see why not! If you're seeing those similarities at first glance, imagine what a deeper dive might uncover. After taking some notes, consider what your central thesis would be and how it could fit within the assignment parameters, then look for critical responses--to both Macbeth and Megan Thee Stallion's music and interviews--that you might use for evidence alongside the primary texts. Exploring such a connection is a great way to create new research that might influence others in the future. Linking older texts with modern people and events is an excellent step toward becoming a lifelong learner, too!

Subject: College Admissions

Question:

What should I write about for my admissions essay?

Answer:

Most colleges that require essays have a selection of prompts from which to choose, and I recommend that students select the prompt that inspires them most. People typically write with more details if they are excited about the topic, and memorable details are vital for admissions essays. Rather than a broad overview of your life, the essay should include information that specifically explains or highlights why you and the school itself are a good match--how will attending the school benefit you, and how will your presence benefit the school?
