When should the subjunctive be used in Spanish?
To remember when the subjunctive mood should be used, use the acronym WEIRD as a pneumonic device. Generally, the subjunctive represents one's own perspective with regards to a situation (the second clause of the sentence), specifically if doubt or emotion id introduced. Two different subjects are usually required.
What is the difference between the subject pronouns 'tu' and 'vous' in French?
Like in other romance languages (and unlike English), there are different possibilities for the equivalent of 'you' in French. The main difference between the forms 'tu' and 'vous' is the level of respect and register of the situation. 'Tu' is used in informal situations and 'vous' is used in more formal situations. For example, when addressing friends, one can use the tu form; when addressing grandparents, professors, and authority figures, vous is preferred. Vous is also used when referring to more than one person ('you all' in English). It is important to recognize that the conjugations of the verb differs depending on the form used- Tu manges and Vous mangez.
How did the Spanish Civil War represent a precursor to World War II?
The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) represents an ideological war between liberal and fascist ideologies. The Second Spanish Republic created a leftist constitution, which included property reform, secularization, and women's right to vote. This contrasted greatly with many of the country's traditional values of conservatism and religion. When the war broke out, nationalist leader Francisco Franco quickly received military support from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Therefore, since aggression being one of the main causes of WWII, the use of fascist forces in Spain prior to the outbreak of the Second World War set the stage for a larger, more global conflict.
