Question:

Two competing pizza parlors offer pizzas for $5. Pizza Plaza offers a square pizza with side lengths 7 inches long. Pizza Pizzazz offers a round pizza with a diameter of 8 inches. Which pizza parlor offers the better bang for your buck?

Answer:

Both restaurants offer pizzas for the same price, so the deciding factor will be the size of each pizza. We can calculate the area of both, and whichever pizza has the larger area offers the better deal. The square pizza has sides of 7 inches. Using the formula A=s^2, where s is the side length, we could write A=7^2, and calculate the area to be 49 in^2. The round pizza has a diameter of 8, which means its radius is 4in. Using the formula A=pi*r^2, we could write A=pi*4^2 and using 3.14 for pi we could calculate the area to be 50.24 in^2. Since the round pizza has a larger area than the square, we can conclude it offers the better value.

Question:

Molly's dump truck has 100 gallons of fuel. If Molly drives her dump truck 52 miles using 13 gallons of fuel, how many miles can she drive on the fuel she has remaining?

Answer:

We need to know how many miles per gallon Molly's dump truck can drive. To calculate that, we divide the 52 miles by 13 gallons of fuel. 52/13=4. This means Molly's dump truck drives 4 miles to the gallon. Next, we need to know how much fuel Molly has remaining. She started with 100 gallons, and used 13. 100-13=87. She has 87 gallons of fuel remaining. If she gets 4 miles for each of the 87 gallons of fuel, we can multiply those to find the total distance she can travel on the remaining fuel. 87*4=348. She can drive 348 miles on the remaining fuel.

Question:

Write the equation of the line perpendicular to y=(-5/2)x-3 that passes through the point (-10,0) in slope-intercept form.

Answer:

Perpendicular lines have opposite reciprocal slopes. To find the slope of our line we must first find the slope of the given equation. Using y=mx+b, we see the given slope is -5/2. The opposite reciprocal is 2/5. Next, we set up the point slope formula using our slope, 2/5, along with the given point, (-10,0). y-0=2/5[x-(-10)]. When we simplify, we get y=2/5x+4.
