Subject: Astronomy

Question:

Can we tell how close a star is to us based on how bright we perceive that star to be?

Answer:

No, we cannot. Stars all have different luminosities, which means they emit different amounts of light. We would not be able to tell, simply by looking at different stars in the sky, if they appear brighter because they are closer to us, or because they are much brighter than all the stars around them.
