Question:

Why is Spanish so confusing?

Lana C.
Answer:

Compared to English, Spanish grammar is actually a lot easier to learn. This is because in English you will always have exceptions to almost every grammar rule and no explanation as to why that is. In Spanish, there are fewer exceptions and they always have an explanation for why the exception exists, which makes things a lot easier when you’re learning. Reading and pronunciation is also made much easier in Spanish because there is only one way to pronounce vowels and everything is pronounced exactly the way it’s written.

English as a Second Language

Question:

Will I ever get rid of my accent?

Lana C.
Answer:

The majority of people who learn English as a second or third language will speak with a noticeable accent. Although this may make you self-conscious, don’t let it hold you back or undermine your confidence in any way. Remember you already speak your first language perfectly, so you are not expected to speak like a native in your non-native tongue. Proper pronunciation is important and should always be practiced and reinforced but, depending on the age you started learning English, completely eliminating an accent may not always be possible. For those who pursue it, accent reduction is a slow process and it takes a lot of practice and patience to successfully reduce or eliminate an accent. It is important to keep in mind that there are many dialects within the English language. Pronunciation and accents among native speakers differ from region to region and country to country so even a native speaker may be told they speak ‘funny’ or with a ‘weird’ accent depending on where they find themselves on the map.

Question:

Why do I need to study English if I already know how to speak it?

Lana C.
Answer:

There is so much more to a language than just being able to speak it. For those whose native language is English, studying grammar rules and understanding the structure of the language may seem unnecessary. However, having a complete comprehension of your own language not only makes you a more educated individual but it gives you a fuller appreciation for this mode of communication and can also assist you in learning another language.
