Answer:

Over the past few years, I have purposely cultivated an educational philosophy to guide my approach in the classroom. A pillar of my educational philosophy is to promote lifelong learners. In my classroom, I aim to promote agency, help students be autonomous, and expose my students to self-motivation and self-regulation strategies that help spark curiosity and create students who are successful in and outside of the classroom. Another element of my teaching philosophy is enthusiasm. As educators, it is important to remember enthusiasm is contagious! It is teachers who set the tone of the classroom.

Question:

Why is it important to teach literature to students today?

Answer:

I am passionate about literature because I believe it teaches empathy. It is through the written word that we try to capture the human experience. It is literature that connects worlds, when you read you are transported to new ones, and when you write you create them. During their formative years, students are coming into their own, developing their own philosophies, and forming their identities. Exposure to diverse ways of thinking and seeing the world is critical at this stage to aid students in their journey to become global citizens.
