What is the most important goal to think about while writing?
Writing is, at its core, about expressing oneself as best as possible. A good writer is not someone who has the most beautiful style or diction, but someone who can show what they mean to say as convincingly as possible. A literary work- whether it is an essay, a novel, or even a simple sentence- is nothing without the ideas it means to convey. All other aspects of writing, from grammar to syntax, exist to make the expression of your ideas possible.
Subject: English as a Second Language
What the difference between denotation and connotation and what is the significance of this in the English language?
Denotation refers to the definition of a word one can find in a dictionary, This is the primary, literal meaning of a word. On the other hand, connotation is the more subtle, culture and context based meaning of a word which can differ from instance to instance. For example, the word "rat," according to its denotation, is a small rodent often found in sewers. However it can also be used to refer to someone who has told a superior or authority figure about something someone else did wrong. This is its connotation, in this instance.
Modern American news and politics have shifted to discussions about immigration. This conversation has put issues of rights, citizenship, and American identity on the forefront of many Americans' minds. This salient issue has many stakeholders, from legal and illegal immigrants, their children, lawmakers, and American citizens. Carefully consider these perspectives, and write a response to this question: What are the costs and the benefits of stricter laws against immigration?
A creative, original, and effective answer would use a 5 paragraph essay structure with a strong thesis statement which claims that either the costs or the benefits are more important, while still maintaining a balanced argument. This thesis would then need to be well supported with strong and balanced examples or anecdotes. For example, an effective thesis could be: "While there exist significant prominent reasons to support stricter immigration policies in the United States, the potential negative impacts to the American economy, international standing, and community outweigh the potential benefits." This thesis sets the essay up with three distinct subtopics which can then be elaborated on in their own paragraphs.
