Question:

What does sexuality represent in the short stories "Bartleby, the Scrivener" and "The Birthmark"?

Anne P.
Answer:

Sexuality in “Bartleby, the Scrivener” and “The Birthmark” represents power, and I argued for the presence of eroticism in the two short stories and why sexuality is important. Melville’s story is not explicit in its eroticism or sensuality, but the emphasized physical structures and depiction of food suggest an erotic reading. In contrast, “The Birthmark” is more apparent in its commentary on female sexuality. In my reading of the story, I go beyond the surface of Georgiana’s demise and delve into the sensual scenes, such as post-marital sex in the laboratory, to portray the fear of a sexually active female. Sex is an ambivalent phenomenon that produces powerful commentary on female sexuality, male homosexual repression, and the intricate power dynamics hidden within sexual politics.
