Subject: International Studies
Please define and explain the importance of the three main IR theories.
The three main IR theories, Realism, Liberalism, and Constructivism, are exceedingly important in understanding global dynamics- through these theoretical perspectives, we are able to grasp relations/interactions among nations, power distribution in the international system, and motivations behind policy. Realism asserts that countries are continuously working on increasing their own power and standing within the global system- and that the main driver of such policies and action is national interest. This theory goes hand-in-hand with the anarchy and the Security Dilemma, which details the ongoing cycle of maximizing a country's own security, causing a threatening feeling within the international system, which then results in other nations increasing security measures. Liberalism investigates the individuals behind that of a nation-state and views leaders. members of society, and civil organizations as main actors within the global system. Within this theory, international relations is seen as a product of globalization, cooperation, and world order. The motivations and actions of the nation are a direct effect from this established order. Constructivism is a theory that investigates the social, historical, and cultural contexts of the international system. Policies and motivations depend upon the unique perspectives of the leaders in power, and their actions reflect the beliefs that are attached to the players/actors around them.
