Which of these examples are an example of active voice as opposed to passive voice? A. By tomorrow, the car will have been repaired by the mechanic. B. The letter was mailed by Mary. C. Over half of the students passed the exam. D. The exam was passed by over half of the students.
The example of active voice is C. Over half of the students passed the exam. In active voice, the subject of the sentence is actively performing the action. In passive voice, the action is performed upon the subject (rather than BY the subject). For example, if we wanted to change options A & B to active voice, it would look something like this... A. The mechanic will have the car repaired by tomorrow. B. Mary mailed the letter. Option C, the correct answer, is an active voice example of option D.
Immigrants from a foreign country migrate to the United States. These immigrants bring a variety of new cultural elements to the local area in which they reside, such as new foods, music, and clothing. Which of the following best describes what is occurring in this example? A. Cultural Relativism B. Cultural Diffusion C. Cultural Hegemony D. Counterculture
B. Cultural Diffusion. Cultural diffusion is what occurs when elements of one group's culture begins to transmit into a new society or group. Cultural relativism is the concept that judgements and interpretations of a group's cultural beliefs/practices should be based on the context of that group's culture. An example: You, an American, visits a new culture that eats insects. In order to understand that culture, cultural relativism suggests looking from the perspective of that culture rather than your own. Cultural hegemony is the concept that, even in incredibly diverse populations, one social class can typically dominate them all. Counterculture is what occurs when subcultures have values/beliefs/practices that go against those of the dominant culture.
A researcher is interested in whether or not placing plants and other greenery in an office space increases employee happiness. Which of the following choices best describes what step the researcher must take to ensure accurate measurement of the dependent variable "happiness"? A. Prevent sampling bias when selecting employees B. Use a double-blind procedure C. Operationally define happiness D. Develop a testable hypothesis
C. Operationally define happiness. Within psychology, researchers sometimes measure variables that are conceptual rather than physical. In this case, "happiness" is not easily measurable. There is no singular way to physically measure happiness and what the word "happiness" means to people differs, allowing for bias in interpretation. In order to prevent this, researchers operationally define concepts (also called constructs) so that they are measurable. For instance, in this experiment, the researcher could decide to use a general happiness survey or even count smiles to define and measure happiness in the experiment.
