Question:

Was the Spanish Revolution fascist?

Thomas B.
Answer:

The development in fascism in Spain was much different that what occurred in Germany or Italy. Its rise to power does not fall in line with Robert Paxton’s five stages of fascism. But even though the fascism in Spain was different it was able to last longer. Franco did have some fascist ways in his government having a one party system, establishing a new way of looking at the world, fixing the economy, and having an elaborate propaganda apparatus. Franco’s more conservative authority than most fascists allowed for the traditional ways of Spain to make a comeback and be relatively stable until Franco’s death in 1975.
