Explain the difference between the id, ego and superego, according to Freud's theory of the subconscious mind.
The id represents the primitive mind and instinctive urges including aggression, sexual desires and repressed memories. The superego is the moral and critical structure of the mind. The ego is essentially the moderator between these two extremes and creates the reality we know.
Explain the difference between mood, tone and theme. Identify what the mood, tone, and theme are in "A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift.
The mood of a written work encompasses the feelings the audience gets while reading the author's words. Mood is created through descriptions and narratives. Tone, on the other hand, describes the author's feelings toward the subject matter. Tone may be inferred by the language the author uses. Theme refers to the overall arching topic or "lesson" the author wants the reader to come away with. For example, in the essay "A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift, the author uses a satiric and sarcastic tone, made evident by his absurdly ironic suggestion of cannibalism being a perfectly reasonable response to poverty. The mood is formal and serious, shown by the straight-forward way in which the author approaches the topic. The themes include poverty, hunger, and the social issue of overpopulation.
