What are some of the main themes in the story of Romeo & Juliet? Why do we still read this play so many years later?
Romeo and Juliet is a classic story, it has stood the test of time because the story can be universal. It is a great example of the power of love, family obligation, and fate. We can apply what we learn for these characters to modern stories today--how what we want in life may not be what our family has in mind for us. And how love an be so blinding, one can be willing to act on it--defying what others may think. It also begs the question--was this all meant to be? Do we believe in fate in real life? Even though the story is old, we feel a connection to the characters' struggle because these are questions we still ask ourselves today.
