Question:

Was John Brown a hero or villain and how should we remember his legacy in American History?

Dan F.
Answer:

The answer to this question is not as simple as it may appear. John Brown, even today, remains as a very controversial figure and is remembered by many as a martyr and by many others as a murder. To successfully analyze Brown's legacy we must look at primary sources from both perspectives to gain a true understanding of who Brown was, and the cause that he fought for. As a Kansan, you can probably guess my stance on his lasting impact for our state and nation.
