Question:

What does the theory of intersectionality entail, and who coined the term?

Alyssa K.
Answer:

The theory of intersectionality was first coined by Kimberle Crenshaw, and it is a theory to address the issues of "Double Jeopardy" and other inequities in the mainstream feminist movement. Intersectionality argues that each person exists at a point of "intersection" between the various components of their identity. For example, no one is JUST a woman, or JUST Black, or JUST heterosexual. There are multiple facets to each individual's identity, and the feminist movement should seek to advance ALL marginalized groups and identities.
