The Haitian Revolution was the first instance in which an independent nation was formed by former slaves. This event frightened European countries who had slave societies in the Caribbean as they believed the event would inspire future rebellions. The Southern states in the United States shared this same fear and began taking measures to prevent such an event from occurring. For Latin America, the Haitian Revolution was the precursor and role model for future revolutions in the region.

How were indentured servitude and slavery different in early America?

White poor people from England engaged in indentured servitude in early America. They had a contract that provided a specific time frame of how long they had to provide labor before being free. Slavery was an institution that defined African labor in the colonies. White indentured servants only had to work for a specific amount of time for minimal pay, but enslaved people were in a perpetual state of having their labor exploited, having no compensation, and being enslaved for life.
